Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
