Defense Department Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon report has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing classified information in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute contained details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Response

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have risked lives or compromised the mission. He added that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the investigation to be partisan.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public later this week.
