EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
