Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
